WELCOME TO GANDER
… and welcome to Beyond 2017! This season features a return to our roots – music and comedy. These are essential components of our Newfoundland culture and we look forward to sharing a season of laughter and song with our audiences this summer in Gander. Come experience a Newfoundland spin on these modern day favourites.
Be sure to check back for updates on our 2018 schedule. This year a new cycle of activity is initiated at Beyond as we begin development of a series of productions based on Gander’s unique history. Just prior to the Second World War, in 1936, work began on the airport that would lead to the birth of our town. By 1937 that airport had become the largest in the world. When war broke out, this little town in the middle of nowhere took on global significance. During the war, the community was filled with British, American, and Canadian military personnel and the support staff who helped them carry out their vitally important work. Frank Sinatra even stopped by to play a concert. The history of this town is truly unlike any other.
After the war the Gander became the “Crossroads of the World.” Every transatlantic flight between New York and London stopped here. Winston Churchill, Nikita Khrushchev, Marlene Dietrich, Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Ingrid Bergman, and Albert Einstein were just a few of the famous names to touch down in Gander. Fidel Castro even went tobogganing right outside our theatre.
Newfoundland and Labrador is blessed with a rich and colourful history, but no other place in the world has a history and an origin story that is quite like that of Gander. Over the next several years we look forward to bringing many of our stories to life.
